Hiya, I’m Dani…
I’m a graphic designer based in Tauranga, New Zealand with a passion for photography, advertising, and branding. My work spans a variety of creative outputs including print design, social media content, digital advertising collateral, product and portrait photography, and developing brand identities.
I’m proficient in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom, and Photoshop, and I love bringing ideas to life through thoughtful design. I thrive in collaborative environments where I can both learn from others and offer leadership when needed.
My biggest inspiration is my Opa, who was also a graphic designer. His creativity and dedication continue to motivate me and shape the kind of designer I aspire to be.
My Name…
When I was coming up with a personal brand name, I knew I wanted to include my Opa in some way. I grew up watching him take photos, draw characters, design sculptures, and create displays. I was always fascinated by the way he worked, how he edited images, set up his camera and lighting, and how his creative mind could put together something that looked amazing and informed people at the same time. I always wanted to do what he was doing.
I spent weeks trying to find a name that felt right. I started with our last name, but it was too hard for people to pronounce. I tried using it in its original German form, but that didn’t work either, it was still tricky to say and read. I even looked into the meaning of our name, Keeper of Geese and tried using Opa’s name, Roland Fritz, or even Roy, but nothing quite fit.
Then I had a conversation with my dad, Elliot (Opa’s eldest son), and he gave me the idea. He suggested I name my brand after Opa’s guardian angel.
Something important to know about my dad’s side of the family is that we’re very spiritual. We believe in guardian angels, in auras, and that our loved ones come back to visit us every once in a while. Opa had, and still has, a very powerful guardian angel who’s watched over all of us, especially since he passed away. Her name is Aravina.
That’s how I landed on the name The Aravina Effect. It felt right. To me, it’s a way to carry on Opa’s legacy through my own creative work. The “Effect” part of the name is about spreading the creativity and inspiration he passed down to me, and hopefully, passing that feeling on to others.
Photography
I've been interested in photography since I was young. My biggest inspiration has always been my Opa, who introduced me to the world of photography and encouraged me to explore it. Over the years, I’ve been lucky to learn from amazing mentors and teachers who helped me grow my skills. I received my first proper camera in high school, which allowed me to take my passion even further. I love experimenting with vibrant colour as well as black and white imagery, focusing on contrast and balance.
Portrait photography has always been my favourite, it’s where I’ve found the most emotion. I enjoy working with people and capturing the small details in their body language and facial expressions that tell a story.
When I started studying graphic design at Media Design School, I inherited my Opa’s photography gear, a full backdrop, lighting, and a product photography setup. This has been incredibly helpful, especially as I’ve recently discovered a real passion for product photography too.
I’d love to continue growing as a photographer and find more ways to bring it into my graphic design work. I’m eager to keep building my skills and knowledge, with the goal of one day taking my photography to a more professional level.
